Scenic Designer & Builder - Matilda The Musical
KOTA Productions is seeking a scenic designer and builder for our uing Mainstage production of Matilda The Musical at Theatre Row in New York City this August. The ideal candidate can create a cohesive, imaginative, and practical scenic design while working within a limited production schedule and modest budget.
KOTA is a New York City-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit performing artspany that provides professional-level training and performance opportunities for young artists. We are looking for a collaborative, creative, and resourceful scenic designer/builder with experience in youth-centered or family-friendly theatrical productions.
Production Schedule
Load-In: August 3, 2026
Tech: August 3-5, 2026
Performances: August 6-9, 2026
Load-Out: August 9, 2026
Responsibilities Include
Scenic design and concept development, including basic drawings, ground plan, and measurements as needed
Construction, painting, finishing, sourcing, and transportation/delivery of all scenic elements within the approved scenic budget
Collaboration with the director, production team, and Director of Production on design needs, venue requirements, logistics, and timeline
Designing/building scenery that is safe, stable, appropriate for young performers, and feasible for Theatre Row's backstage and stage limitations
Coordination with the Director of Production to ensure scenery can be efficiently installed within the 5-hour load-in window and struck within the 4-hour load-out window
Supervising and working alongside a small crew during load-in/load-out, with the option to hire and manage an assistant if needed within the agreed scope/budget
Experience with educational theatre, modular/stylized scenic work, or fast-turnaround productions is a plus.
