POSITION DESCRIPTION

CAP collaborates with Detroit community organizations to create art and design education, experiences, and resources for local youth and families in support of individual and community development.

In support of this mission, CAP provides programs that foster individual & community development through visual art and design classes that are focused on skill development, self-discovery, self-expression, and social emotional learning. These programs bring art & design education to students and help share career and educational opportunities in visual art & design fields with children attending Detroit schools.

Since the department's founding in 2001, CAP has provided out-of-school art & design programs to more than 80,000 students. All programs are led by Teaching Artists who have attended CAP's intensive 21-hour Teaching Artist training programs. After attending the training sessions, Teaching Artists are placed in a wide variety of programs serving students from predominantly underserved neighborhoods in schools, libraries, and other community centers within 25 miles of CCS. All CAP programs are centered on hands-on art making with custom art & design curricula written and delivered by our Teaching Artists.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Have reliable personal transportation
• Report to work site prepared with supplies and no less than 15 minutes before class begins
• Write and deliver custom curriculum for assigned programs blending the school's requested subjects with their own art practice
• Work with CAP administrative staff to procure appropriate supplies to support the curriculum in a timely manner
• Completing and submitting attendance, photos, paperwork, and timesheet in a timely manner
• Retain and submit properly documented student artwork for consideration in exhibitions when applicable

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Artist - Must be a practicing artist demonstrable through exhibitions, portfolio, education, etc.
• Educator - Must have some experience teaching (formal or informal) and/or working in community programs.
• Availability - Must be available to work during after-school hours (weekdays roughly between 2pm and 7pm).
• Communication - Must return phone calls, texts, and emails in a timely manner.
• Professionalism - Must behave in a professional manner; Teaching Artists represent CCS to the broader community.
• Teamwork - Must work well with others (CAP staff, site staff, students, etc.) in classroom & CAP office environments.
• Stewardship - Must leave classroom/teaching spaces cleaner than they found them.
• Technology - Must be able to use WhatsApp and Google Workspace including email, drive, sheets, docs, etc.
• Detroit - Must be comfortable navigating and working in Detroit area neighborhood schools, community centers, churches, etc.
• Interest - Must demonstrate an interest in contributing to/investing in Detroit youth, their families, and neighborhoods.

Desired Skills/Abilities

• Multilingual - Language skills specifically in Arabic and Spanish will help us better serve our students.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job operates in Detroit Area Schools, other community centers and a college campus environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to maintain a stationary position, use a computer and other office equipment, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and virtually. Frequent interaction with others, including staff, faculty, students and third parties is required. The employee may occasionally be required to move files or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds, including from low and high places. The ability to move around within the office and between buildings on campus, attend off-site meetings and events, and travel between Ford Campus site to Taubman Center site are required. CCS will make reasonable accommodations that will allow individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
