The Paul Robeson Galleries was founded in 1979 at the Robeson Campus Center at Rutgers University Newark. Named after one of the Universitys most famous alumni, the galleries mission and programming embody Paul Robesons life-long commitment to unfettered artistic freedom, cultural democracy, and transnationalism manifested through a network of exhibition spaces on campus, and extensive community outreach programs, education programs and an active public programs series including happenings, lectures, panels, symposia, readings, receptions, and performances.

Posting Summary:
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Artist II (Temporary) for the Paul Robeson Galleries which will be reporting to Gallery Director of the Paul Robeson Galleries. The Artist II will help to lead art-making workshops and programs; such as performances, lecturers, panel discussions, with Paul Robeson Galleries ( PRG ) community partners and RU-N affiliated stakeholders. Duties include and are not limited to:

  • Participate fully in collections care, exhibitions, programs, and external development related to the collection
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strong visual arts education curriculum
  • Ensure that the curriculum serves as the foundation for all programming in the galleries, public programs and outreach
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Details:
$20-$28 per hour

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience:
  • Requires a Bachelors degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.


Certifications/Licenses:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelors degree in Visual Art, Arts Education, and/or Education, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
  • At least two years experience teaching in school or non-school-affiliated arts program


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Specialty training and/or experience in early childhood education, special needs education, CORE curriculum, STEAM , senior care, and/or working with individuals with disabilities
  • Visual artists with active studio practice preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • Must be able to travel to and from PRG as well as off-site locations
  • Artist Educators are expected to traverse some distances to/from parking or public transportation locations to workshop locations, as ready access to convenient parking is difficult to come by in Newark and not all off-site locations are compliant to Americans with Disabilities Act standards
  • Must be able and willing to lift up to 15 pounds and handle suitcases of art supplies
