Position Overview

We are seeking a talented and versatile Scenic Artist to join our freelance fabrication team. This role is ideal for artists and makers with strong scenic painting and finishing skills, with a particular emphasis on sculpting and texture work. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, andfortable working in a collaborative shop environment while adapting to varying project demands and timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Execute scenic painting, faux finishes, texturing, aging, and decorative surface treatments

Sculpt and carve materials such as foam, wood, plaster, clay, or other fabrication materials

Assist with fabrication, assembly, and finishing of scenic elements and custom installations

Interpret renderings, design references, and creative direction accurately

Mix paints, stains, and coatings to achieve desired finishes and textures

Collaborate with fabricators, carpenters, and project managers to meet deadlines

Maintain a clean,anized, and safe workspace

Troubleshoot creative and technical challenges during production and installation

Qualifications & Requirements

Prior experience in scenic art, theatrical painting, fabrication, sculpture, or related fields preferred

Strong sculpting skills highly preferred

Knowledge of scenic painting techniques, materials, and finishing processes

Experience working with foam carving, texture applications, molds, or specialty finishes is a plus

Ability to read drawings, renderings, and project specifications

Comfortable using hand tools, paint equipment, and fabrication tools safely

Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines

Reliable transportation to shop and job sites

Ability to lift materials and work on your feet for extended periods

Schedule & Availability

Flexible schedule required

Must be available for occasional nights and weekends based on project needs

Freelance/project-based scheduling

Compensation

Starting at $25/hour
